Today, the is being used by private air crafts of Tata Steel for their executives. This airport does not have the ability to accommodate aircraft larger than 60 seater turboprops. It can cater to small air crafts only. Tata Steel has notified that the airport will be converted from 3C to 2C. This airport comes under the aegis of AAI (Airport Authority of India). The airport is not very far from the bus stand or even Tatanagar Railway station.
A new airport (''Greenfield airport'') has also been proposed in Adityapur-Seraikela area. This airport will boast of a 7,000 feet long runway and will be spread across 600 acres. Also, it will be well equipped to handle A320 flights which is a distant possibility on the airport in Sonari area. For establishing this new airport, a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was signed on 20th February, 2012, by AAI and Jharkhand Government. The land for this project will be provided to AAI by the Jharkhand government.
Tata Steel Limited has roped in TRIL (TATA Realty and Infrastructure Limited) which is the infrastructure development company of Tata Group. TRIL has a tie-up with Singapore's Changi airports International for non-metro airports. This seems to give hope and momentum to the much needed construction of a new airport in Jamshedpur. With the development of this airport, commercial airlines such as Airbus A320 will be able to land and take off, connecting Jamshedpur with many near and distant cities in India.
The nearest airport to Jamshedpur at present is Ranchi airport (Birsa Munda International Airport - (103.29 Km / 64.18 Miles) or Kolkata airport (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport - 233.73 Km / 145.23 Miles). People take a train or bus to Ranchi or Kolkata and then board an aircraft to reach their destination in India or abroad.
