Jamshedpur History - Important Milestones

Jamshedpur city has an interesting history connected with Tatas who gave India its first Iron and Steel Company. Even after 100 years, the steel conglomerate has expanded its wings in diverse areas of business and has catapulted into a global giant. Jamshedpur city derives its name from its founder Jamshetji Nusserwanji Tata. Every year, on 3rd March, the city is decked up with coloured lights to commemorate Founder's Day.


Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata lays foundation of Tata Group

1868

Search for a site rich in iron, coal, limestone and water.

1904

The Tata Iron and Steel Company (now Tata Steel) is registered.

1907

The construction of the plant as well as Jamshedpur city officially began.

1909

The first steel ingot was rolled.Also, Tata Steel introduces   1912  eight-hour working days for employees.                     

J.R.D. Tata began his career in the Tata group.         1962           

     

Ratan Tata, became Chairman of the Tata group.

1991
JRD Tata awarded Bharat Ratna.1992

New Tata Group corporate mark and logo are launched.

1999

TCS becomes the first Indian software company to cross one billion dollars in revenues.                                           2003

Jamshedpur nominated  first South Asian city for the pilot phase of the UN Global Compact Cities Programme.

2004

Tata Steel celebrates its centenary on

August 26, 2007.

Tata Motors announces commercial launch of the Nano.

2009

Jamshedpur was declared the 7th cleanest city of India for the year 2010

2010

Cyrus P Mistry takes over as Chairman, Tata Sons, from Ratan N Tata

2012

Tata Motors Jamshedpur rolls out its two millionth truck.
